Women's Weekly Children's Birthday Cakes

With Little Jack's first birthday approaching I'm in need of a Women's Weekly Kids Birthday Cakes book. I could just buy the latest edition* at the supermarket, but eBay offers so many more vintage editions...

I'm tempted to get the 90s edition with the side-on train on the front. Follow instructions from the days when kids' birthday cakes were suburbanely iced rather than competitively fondant-coated.

Do you have any of these books at home? Which edition has the best cakes?

* That's the one with the toadstool house on the cover. One of the cakes it offers is a fondant-covered goth head on a platter.

I don't have any of the books, but if i did I'd send them to you. My daughters make the cutest cakes for their kids. I always made cute ones for their birthdays, but they are way ahead of me in this department.

I have the first book and really like it. So did my kids when they were little. They would spend hours looking thru to see what cakes they would like for their party. There is actually another Womens Weekly book called Kids Parties which is very good. It has cakes as well as costumes, decorations, games etc. Another book I think that you might add to your list!

Oh, the first book, the first book! Had it growing up. I have the third, happy to send it your way if you like, but I'm not overly impressed - all fondant icing, pretty plastic-fantastic.
Hmmm, must start thinking about Charlie's birthday. Yes, he's just behind Jack, 10.5 months right now. Poor kid, I'll probably forget his birthday... he's the second child.

My Mum had (and still has) the first book with the train on the cover. I loved it. It inspired me to even make my OWN birthday cakes when I was a kid. Now I make them for my bf, sooo much fun.

I also grew up with the first book. I remember attempting to make the caterpillar cake before I understood how baking worked. I mixed something up and stuck it under the grill. Needless to say it didn't turn out. And then the 10 or so kids I had invited over from school for a party turned up. I hadn't mentioned that to Mum. She did a very good job of covering by whipping out some chips and other snacks (our family always had a big stock pile of snacks). I felt a bit guilty after it all, as most of the kids bought me presents! We live and learn. I had forgotten about this story, thanks for reminding me! I might have to post it on my blog : )

I have both the side-on train book (like the one we had growing up) which I bought off ebay. I also bought the toadstool one new but have only made one cake out of it - preferring the suburban icing of the 80's!

My recently turned 3 year old also prefers the old book - all three of her cakes have come out of that book. The smartie covered #1, the Hickory Dickory Dock and this year it was the giraffe.

Good luck choosing a cake for Jack.

I've got the first book and the one with the mushroom if you're interested in borrowing them...
